하지만, 그림에 나오는 엄마의 직업은 댄서가 아니라 삽 등 가정용 공구 판매상인 것으로 확인되었다. 지난 겨울 폭설로 인해 삽을 필요로 하는 손님이 크게 늘었고, 덕분에 돈을 많이 벌었던 엄마의 모습을 묘사한 그림인 것. 그림을 둘러싼 소동은 '순수한 동심을 혼탁한 시선의 어른들이 오해하는 바람에 일어난 사건'이라는 평가를 받고 있다.

I told her we sold out every single shovel we had, and then I found one more in the back room, and that several people were fighting over who would get it. Her picture doesn’t show me dancing around a pole. It’s supposed to depict me selling the last snow shovel we had at Home Depot. From now on I will remember to check her homework more thoroughly before she turns it in.
