William is a representational artist working in oil and pastel. He views figures, landscape, or still life as opportunities to explore the effects of light on form. Painting from life, he seeks to capture the feeling of a particular moment and place. He admires the work of Sargent, Zorn, Sorolla, Cecelia Beaux, Elizabeth Sparhawk Jones, Ilya Repin, and Nicolai Fechin as well as contemporary masters such as Richard Schmid and Dan Gerhartz.

William initially studied art at the University of Illinois at Urbana. However, upon graduation he began a career in the music business (records on the Roulette, MGM, and Titanium labels). In the mid '80s, he entered finance (co-owner of an investment consulting firm, DiMeo Schneider and Associates). Now he has returned to his first love, painting. Bill enrolled in evening classes at the School of the Art Institute in 1989 but grew disenchanted with the focus on non-objective art. A conversation with Dan Gerhartz led him to the American Academy of Art where he studied figure drawing with William Parks and oil painting with Ted Smuskiewicz for the next eight years. He has also studied with Scott Burdick, Harley Brown, Scott Christiansen, Ramon Kelley, David Leffel, Richard Schmid, Cyrus Afsary and Ralph Oberg. Bill continues his “post graduate” education by painting with Dan Gerhartz and Romel de la Torre on a regular basis. In 2001, Bill sold his investment firm to focus on a career in art. He lives in Crystal Lake with his wife Caren and their two youngest children. “Painting Landscapes in Oil” has just been published by Walter Foster Publishing, Inc. William is one of four artists featured in the book. It is available at Michael's and other art stores. William's second Walter Foster book, Pastel II is scheduled for release in December 2003.
